A Leader in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery

Dr. Shani Belgrave, M.D., a highly esteemed minimally invasive and bariatric surgeon hailing from Silver Spring, Maryland. Her impressive academic journey began at Brown University, where she completed both her undergraduate and medical school education. She then honed her surgical skills during her residency at the University of Maryland, earning numerous accolades for her research on tissue remodeling after injury. Following this, Dr. Belgrave pursued a fellowship at the University of Washington, specializing in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. Passionate about teaching and mentoring, she actively participates in several professional medical societies and serves on the board of the Atlanta Medical Association. Dr. Belgrave is also the host of The Coalition Talk Show, where she discusses health, wellness, and inspiration, reflecting her dedication to improving patient lives both in and out of the operating room.

What is the inspiration behind your work?

I am extremely inspired by the transformation that patients have after weight loss surgery. Bariatric surgery offers so many people a new lease on life and I love being part of a new beginning. Many patients have resolution of sleep apnea, diabetes and a host of other ailments which is extremely gratifying.

Do you believe in work- life balance?

Yes, living a well-rounded and balanced life is key to health, longevity, and the ability to provide good care for others. I achieve work-life balance by practicing mindfulness, and meditation.

Who is your business role model? Why?

My grandmother is my business role model. She was an entrepreneur who had multiple businesses. She was resourceful and always generous.

What is your proudest business accomplishment?

Other than becoming a surgeon my proudest professional accomplishment is launching The Coalition Talk Show. It’s a project that has fostered conversations about wellness and health. These conversations that happen around kitchen tables, and on phone calls with friends have the potential to change a life or save a life. Surgery is helping people one person at a time. Media has the potential to have a multiplicative effect where people can be reached by hundreds or thousands. I’m excited touch people’s lives through surgery, and also through the use of media.

What are some common misconceptions about bariatric surgery that you often encounter?

There is a misconception that bariatric surgery is risky. The safety profiles for weight loss surgery is excellent. Surgery does have some risk but the risks are low and the benefits are tangible and durable. There is also a misconception that weight loss surgery is cosmetic. Bariatric surgeries are not cosmetic procedures. Obesity is a chronic condition that is associated with numerous health problems ranging from diabetes to certain cancers. Weight loss surgery is a powerful tool for improving health.
