7 Tips to Be a Showstopper Guest

Getting on TV is a game-changer, whether you’re promoting your book, building your brand, or sharing expertise. Dr. Robert Kotler, a cosmetic surgeon, made waves when he appeared on CNN’s Paula Zahn Now. Here’s how he nailed it—and how you can, too.

1. Lock Down the Segment with the Producer

Dr. Kotler’s publicist connected him with a show booker for a quick screening, and after passing, he started working with an associate producer to plan out his 3-4 minute segment.

Tip: Once you get the green light, work with the producer to map out the segment. Make sure you know what points you want to hit and that they line up with the show’s vibe.

2. Help Shape the Storyline

Dr. Kotler pushed his book, Secrets of a Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon, and focused on key consumer tips, like picking the right surgeon and ensuring the surgery facility is certified and safe.

Tip: Producers love guests who come prepared. Pitch segment ideas that speak to their audience but don’t be shy about suggesting alternatives if you think they’re missing something. Collaboration is key.

3. Be Ready for Curveballs

Even though Dr. Kotler and the producer planned to talk about safe surgeries, the host, Paula Zahn, switched it up, focusing more on celebrity plastic surgeries instead.

Tip: Expect the unexpected. TV shows might change direction at the last second, especially if they think it’ll keep the audience hooked. Roll with it, but don’t forget to slide in your key points.

4. Prep Your Answers and Steer the Conversation

Even though the interview didn’t go as expected, Dr. Kotler could have bridged back to his main message by saying something like, “Even celebrities can have bad results—here’s how to avoid it yourself.”

Tip: When things go off-script, use a smooth transition to steer back to what matters to you. For example, “That’s interesting, and it reminds me of…”

5. Follow the Host’s Flow—But Make Your Mark

Dr. Kotler decided to go with the flow of the interview instead of taking control. But it’s all about balance. You can follow the host’s lead and still deliver your key points.

Tip: It’s all about finesse. Answer the host’s questions, but be ready to pivot to what you want to say. It’s a win-win when you balance their questions with your talking points.

6. Let the Show Do the Heavy Lifting

Throughout the day, CNN hyped Dr. Kotler’s segment, dropping his name constantly. That kind of promo is priceless!

Tip: Let the show do its thing. Don’t be too pushy about promoting yourself—just make sure your website, book, or product gets some airtime. Always bring your product in case they lost what you sent.

7. Enjoy the Shine and Pitch Again

Dr. Kotler got a boost in recognition—and his 87-year-old parents loved seeing him on TV. But beyond family props, the exposure was great for his brand. He even pitched a new segment idea to the producers.

Tip: National TV is gold for your credibility. After your segment, reach out to other shows or pitch a new angle while you’re still in the studio. Strike while the iron’s hot!
