The People’s Lawyer
Bobby H. Caldwell (1934-2023)

Notable civil rights attorney and activist Bobby H. Caldwell passed away due to natural causes, according to his family, on Wednesday, January 11th, only three weeks before the upcoming release of his autobiography, The People’s Lawyer: A Radical Representation of Change, Courage, and Commitment to Civil Rights, during Black History Month. Caldwell practiced law for over 50 years, defending many civil and human rights activists such as Lee Otis Johnson, a man who received 30 years for one marijuana cigarette and was later successfully appealed. Bobby Caldwell also represented two of the TSU-5 and the Houston’s People’s Party II, later the Black Panther Party.

A memorial tribute will be held Saturday, February 18th at 2:00 p.m. at the SHAPE Community Center located at 3903 Almeda Road in Houston to celebrate his life and contributions to civil rights. Caldwell received numerous awards and recognition across the country, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Black Panther Party and several NAACP awards.
