As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, it is our distinct pleasure to introduce our readers to Dana Hicks-Hungerford.

Why is the mental health topic vital for you to showcase through the arts?

Dana: I wrote “A Woman’s Love” stage play with the intention of saving lives and bringing more awareness to mental health. My goal is to continue to make people from all walks of life understand that mental health issues are a serious global issue.

What was the inspiration behind your play?

Dana: Seeing and hearing about real-life issues that people have within families and in relationships. My writing is very real and raw. I wanted the story to be very impactful and memorable for the audience, therefore I couldn’t water my story down.

What should audiences brace themselves for ahead of seeing “A Woman’s Love”?

Dana: The play is an emotional roller coaster that explores the idea of one person seemingly having it all, to the realization that lies and deception from people that are the closest to you can happen to any of us. The character Angela’s journey will show us just how powerful women can be when hit with so many different issues like dealing with one’s own mental health, trying to balance work and marriage and overcoming obstacles that seem
insurmountable.

When did you realize you had a passion for writing?

Dana: Once I saw my stage play truly come alive for the first time on stage at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club.

What do you want people who see this play to leave the theater knowing?

Dana: I want everyone to know that I put my heart and soul into this story. Mental health is such an important topic that we need to continue to explore and discuss. Also, I want everyone to know that race, gender, ethnicity, and background are non-factors when it comes to mental health and how impactful it has been and will continue to be.
