Dr. Cashuna Huddleston, Transforming Black Women’s Mental Health

Dr. Cashuna “Shun” Huddleston is not just a licensed psychologist; she’s a trailblazer reshaping the mental health landscape, particularly for Black women. Based in Houston, Texas, Dr. Huddleston is known for her expertise in treating co-morbid physical and psychological disorders, blending her evidence-based practices with a deep understanding of the unique struggles faced by women of color. Through her two private practices, she serves a wide range of clients, offering compassionate care that’s grounded in her extensive experience in hospitals, outpatient therapy, and forensic settings. With a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Houston and advanced training from prestigious institutions like Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Huddleston is uniquely qualified. Her educational background provides the foundation for her holistic approach to therapy, one that acknowledges the intricate connections between the mind and body.

Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Huddleston is a force within the psychology community. She co-authored a significant grant from the American Psychological Association aimed at advancing the careers of women of color in psychology, and she has been honored with the MLK Dream Award from the 40 Acre Conference. These accolades reflect her commitment to driving change, both within her field and for the broader community. One of her most notable achievements is her tenure as the Past President of the Psychology of Black Women. During her leadership, she organized the landmark “100 Black Women in Psychology” event at the APA Conference, bringing together experts to spotlight the importance of mental health support tailored to the needs of Black women. Her efforts in this space are a testament to her dedication to creating pathways for more diverse voices in psychology. Dr. Huddleston’s impact extends beyond her professional life. She actively mentors Black female high school students who are interested in pursuing psychology, offering them guidance and insight into a career path that’s often underrepresented by women of color. Additionally, her role in the Suits for Success program, where she serves as a mental health expert for young male athletes, showcases her commitment to supporting mental wellness in various communities.

When asked what’s next on her horizon, Dr. Huddleston shared her excitement about the future. “I’m continuing to build my brand and practice through lifestyle media outlets, podcasts, and interviews,” she explained. Having been featured in publications like Good Housekeeping and Voyage Houston, she’s already making waves. But her vision extends even further, with plans to create a grief therapy app, expand her consulting services for private practices, and launch a mental health podcast titled Shrinks with a Drink. Dr. Huddleston’s mission is clear: to foster understanding, empowerment, and healing for those who need it most, especially Black women.

As her career continues to evolve, her influence will undoubtedly grow, leaving an indelible mark on the psychology profession and the communities she serves. Whether through her innovative use of technology, her mentorship, or her clinical expertise, Dr. Huddleston is committed to transforming lives and elevating the conversation around mental health.
