From Pie Roots to Royal Heights: Unveiling Royal Cheesecake’s Sweet Triumph

Meet Kenneth and Tamara Williams, the culinary power couple behind Royal Cheesecake & Varieties, where every dessert is a testament to their passion and commitment. From humble beginnings baking pies under an apple tree in their Detroit backyard, their journey has evolved into an upscale bakery experience that’s redefining sweet indulgence. Discover the captivating tale of how a kiosk at Northgate Mall in Durham marked the starting point for Royal Cheesecake & Varieties during the holiday season of 2013. The journey unfolded through various farmers markets, festivals, and the acquisition of a dessert truck, ultimately leading to the establishment of their brick-and-mortar haven in Raleigh, NC. As Kenneth, culinary certified, and Tamara, grandma certified, blend their unique skills, the bakery not only offers delectable desserts but an upscale experience akin to a luxury hotel lobby.

From the distinct flavors like Chicken & Waffle Cheesecake, Biscuit & Gravy Cheesecake, to the NC Sweet Potato Pound Cake, every visit promises the Royal service and an option to create memories in an upscale space available for private events. Join us on this flavorful expedition as we delve into the heart of Royal Cheesecake & Varieties, exploring the inspiration behind their journey, the essence that makes them unique, and the recipe for their success. The Williams share not only their delectable creations but also valuable insights into maintaining work-life balance and navigating the entrepreneurial path with resilience and purpose.

What was the inspiration behind your company?

Tamara: Ken is culinary certified and I, Tamara, is grandma certified. Ken grew up baking pies with his mom while I learned some of some baking techniques from my Mississippi born grandmother. Both of us love to bake and after I had initially told Ken that I did not want to work with him, I prayed and reviewed and decided to join him.

What makes your bakery unique?

Ken: Our bakery is unique because it’s an upscale bakery. When you walk in, you get more than just viewing a case, grabbing your dessert and leave; you get the Royal service. It will remind you of a luxury hotel lobby that sells desserts and an upscale space that can be rented for private events.

Name some of your unique flavors.

Ken: Chicken & Waffle Cheesecake, Biscuit & Gravy Cheesecake, and NC Sweet Potato Pound Cake.

Do you believe in work- life balance? If so, how do you maintain it?

Tamara: Yes we do. We schedule one night a week as date night. This night is mine and Ken’s. Sometimes we have a coffee break, watch a movie, try a new restaurant. We rest and enjoy each other.

What do you define as success?

Tamara: We define success as being financially free, having longevity in the business for over 10 years, (Thank you Lord) and mentoring others with the experience we obtained and watching them become successful. Additionally, being able to help the community and others in need would not hinder us.

What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

Ken: Your family and friends are not your customers that’s going to take you to the next level. Things are going to happen in their life and their finances will change. You need to be a part of your community, that’s your support system.

Also remember your why. Why are you doing this in the first place so on tough days you can lean on that.

Have a plan in place but do understand that things will change. Have a cushion for your business.
