Interview With Music Artist, Viral Sensation, and Artist, Toushai

Toushai is an artist like no other. Singer, painter, director, tattoo artist, creative extraordinaire, a true multi-talent. From breathtaking vocal performances to incredible artwork, TOUSHAI has established herself as a force to be reckoned with. Her dedication has earned her the respect of her peers and supporters alike; an artist that continues to surprise, innovate, and inspire. She is a true creative, a living example that art can take many forms no matter our background and experience; we can always find a way to express ourselves through art always pushing boundaries and inspiring others to do the same.

We obtained an exclusive interview with Toushai.

In what ways do you want to make history as a woman in the entertainment industry?

Toushai: With women, we are either seen as too strong and independent or too weak and just a pushover; with men, they’re either hyper-masculine or too “feminine”…I have never seen or known an energy that’s like the “female Prince”….except for myself. There are so many people on this earth who are both equally masculine as they are feminine. I want to be able to make everyone never see me as neither masculine nor feminine and just see me for me. As a kick-ass human, I naturally am.

We recently celebrated Women’s History Month. What does it mean to you and how do you celebrate Women’s history month?

Toushai: I celebrate by making sure to practice my boundaries and how I allow people to treat me, as the woman I am. I make sure to honor those who treat me softly even through my masculinity because I am a woman before I am my strengths and weaknesses.

In what ways do you feel you have experienced rebirth, growth, and renewal in your professional or personal life?

Toushai: I feel I always cycle through these moments. Not very different from seasons changing. I started as an athlete, became a tattoo artist, and grew into body painting, and that transformed into multimedia and that into me now using my voice.

As a professional, what is your process for obtaining a work and life balance?

Toushai: I tried to treat my career as a 9–5 but sometimes you’re up all night and some days you’re up earlier than normal and at that point, I just realized my whole life just needs a schedule. I live every day the same hypothetically. I give everything its proper timing and the only way I go off schedule is if it naturally works that way or an emergency where the people I love need me more than whatever I have going on. It’s not really a struggle. Everything just has its own time.

What are you currently working on?

Toushai: I am currently working on a music project and working towards sharing more music pertaining to my own true emotions and experiences. A new art project in my eyes.

What do you hope for women of color through your art?

Toushai: I hope through my art our voices and experiences are HEARD and SEEN more.

What advice would you give to women in art and entertainment to sustain healthy mental health?

Toushai: I would share that sometimes we have to turn off the noise and continue shedding light on our truths regardless of the stones thrown. A healthy mentality comes from what you allow into your mind and heart; what you can block out without fighting ultimately determines the peace in your mind.
