Being an actor at this time is so special to Marcus Murphy because he feels there are so many stories that are being told from different perspectives. He took the time to chat with us about the vibe and environment he establishes when he’s reading and learning a script.
Marcus says in order for him to embark on a film is first meditating and praying that the script is for him. As much as he enjoys working as a talent being authentic in my craft is important. If Marcus cannot relate to the character, he can’t expect the audience to either. After receiving the clarity needed to accept or decline the job presented to him the work begins by going into nature or the library to read his script to get a feel of the story and characters.
The chemistry amongst everyone is important to deliver a great performance on and off screen says Marcus. He typically reads the script three to five times prior to the character development and finding nuances because each time he reads and takes notes it enhances his awareness of the story even better. Afterward, Marcus meets with his acting coach to receive perspective and be provided the direction to take to make the character realistic as possible.
The best part for Marcus he shares is being able to speak directly to the directors before filming to receive any notes on the character during their creation process so they can have a better work relationship. It is their vision and respecting their work is important to Marcus. Therefore, once he has done all he needs to do and feels confident to deliver a performance Marcus winds down by having a self-care day to reset his mind.
After long days of film and rehearsals, what is the first thing you like to do?
Marcus: The beauty of being able to work is a blessing but the sacrifices of rehearsing long days with a cast and independently on your time can be tiring. The first thing I do after a long day is stretch for about 20 minutes to loosen my muscles because my body is intense. I need to calm myself down by stretching and meditation by having calm music playing in the background. After that, I do my nightly routine by showering, brushing my teeth, skin care routine, and playing bible verses on YouTube to help me sleep. The next day back to the hustle and grind with a clearer mindset.
What is the next acting projects you have this year?
Marcus: The next acting projects I have approaching this year is quite a few. The first project I will be filming in late March is a series called We Want Justice created by Marlon Reid and directed by KaZarr Coleman. The follow up project filming in July is Greed and Loyalty written and directed by DeWayne Etheridge. I serve as executive producer along with acting in the project. In August I have the distinguished pleasure of being on stage for the award-winning book Tales of A Grown Girl opening in Maryland, and in the Fall being seen in New York. I have some great projects ahead of me and each character challenges me.
In addition to acting and modeling, what else are you up to these days?
Marcus: Acting and modeling is cool, and I cannot forget what has been holding me afloat all these years. Be that as it may, I am older now so my interest in being a talent is not at the forefront anymore. I am interested and taking action with my own ideas and learning how to work behind the camera. I cannot say too much at this moment but a passion project of mines is creating a biopic regarding an old Hollywood legend who opened the doors for black actors like myself. The writing process is way different but exciting to embark on it and have the support of my peers in the industry to guide me.
What have been some of the biggest inspirations and motivations that keep you pursuing your creative career?
Marcus: The biggest inspirations for me to continue this entertainment journey is knowing that it is not about me. It is doing the work in this moment and paving the way for the generation behind me. I am motivated to know that each stride I take in my career is placing me one step further to my dreams but being aware that all opportunities are not for me. Therefore, I strategically work with those who have good energy and love the craft. I am a student first and learn from everyone around me.
How would you describe this point of your career?
Marcus: At this point in my career I am just thankful to still be doing the art. I have my moments where I may be discouraged or feel I haven’t arrived at larger arenas in my career. After I get those negative thoughts out of my head, I realize you are where you need to be in this moment because when the bigger moments arrive. It will be more appreciative due to not rushing the journey. The work I have been fortunate to participate in has been rewarding.
What more would you like to achieve?
Marcus: As I mentioned, being a talent is great but being behind the camera is what I would like to do next in my career. I would like to provide opportunities for upcoming talent and own my own production company as well. I will achieve the goals I set out for myself by taking my time and surrounding myself with a great time.
