Tell us about your creative process as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, and arranger. How do you infuse your passion into music?
Cheryl: I infused electric passion into the rhythmic beats. My passion and creativity carved the unique sound into the spirit of KLYMAXX.
How did you manage to maintain your magnetic musical power and maintain a work-life balance with KLYMAXX throughout the years?
Cheryl: I believe in a work-life balance, but I must admit, I’m not good at that. Music and the business of my music is so much of my life that it intertwines with my everyday living. I know I must learn to make room for more balance. As an independent artist not signed to a label, I have to do everything on my own. This is a blessing and can be overwhelming at times.
When did you know you wanted to become a singer/entertainer?
Cheryl: When I was a kid and I saw the Beatles performing on television, I thought, “gee, I want to do that when I grow up”. My parents always gave me a toy guitar every other Christmas, so I would say the guitar choose me, lol. When Sly and the Family Stone introduced funk music into the music industry, I felt in my soul funk music would be the style I wanted to learn and play. My sister was married to a Jazz musician, Hubert Laws, and one day he had his guitar at my parents’ house and I told him I had (toy) one also. So I played a little tune on it and my sister screamed, “let’s get Cheryl some guitar lessons” and that was the start of my musical journey.
Would you say have paved the way for other female artists and bands?
Cheryl: Yes, KLYMAXX paved the way for many of the more prominent female artists of this current generation such as Beyoncè, Lizzo, and Fantasia to have all — female bands.
What’s next for you and KLYMAXX?
Cheryl: KLYMAXX and I continue to ignite diverse audiences of all demographics across the globe. I will continue to drop new music and detonate audiences into the joy of the funk.
