What was the inspiration behind starting your practice?

Dr. Shaenor: The inspiration behind starting my practice was deeply personal and rooted in my own experiences as a mother. Becoming a mother myself was a transformative journey, particularly with the challenges I faced having a child at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and during my second pregnancy and delivery.

The traumatic experience of delivering a baby at 27 weeks gestation and spending multiple months in the NICU with my youngest child was a pivotal moment for me. It opened my eyes to the immense emotional strain that parents face when their child is in intensive care, and I realized there was a significant gap in support for families navigating this journey.

Witnessing the emotional rollercoaster, the stress, and the overwhelming feelings that parents in the NICU experienced, I felt compelled to do something to help. I wanted to provide a safe space where mothers like myself could receive the support and guidance they needed to navigate the complexities of maternal mental health. Drawing from my background in mental health therapy, I decided to specialize in maternal mental health, knowing firsthand the unique challenges that mothers face during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

My own journey through motherhood, especially the difficulties surrounding my youngest child’s NICU stay, inspired me to create resources like the NICU journal. I wanted to offer something tangible to help other parents cope with the stress and uncertainty of the NICU experience, knowing how valuable such support would have been for me during that challenging time.

Ultimately, my practice is not just a profession; it’s a passion born out of my own struggles and triumphs as a mother. My goal is to create a nurturing environment where women feel heard, understood, and empowered to prioritize their mental health during one of the most transformative periods of their lives.

Do you believe in work- life balance? If so, how do you maintain it?

Dr. Shaenor: As a maternal mental health therapist and a mother myself, I wholeheartedly believe in the importance of work-life balance. Maintaining this balance is crucial for my well-being and enables me to provide the best possible care for my clients while also being present for my family.

One way I maintain a work-life balance is by setting clear boundaries between my work and personal life. I have designated work hours and make a conscious effort to prioritize my family and personal time outside of those hours. This means setting aside specific times for work-related tasks and ensuring that I have dedicated time for my family and self-care activities.

I also prioritize self-care as a key component of maintaining balance. This includes activities such as exercise and spending quality time with my family. Taking care of my own mental and physical health allows me to show up fully for my clients and my family.

Additionally, I have a strong support system in place, including my husband, family members, friends, and colleagues. This support network helps me manage the demands of both my work and personal life and allows me to ask for help when I need it.

Overall, maintaining a work-life balance is an ongoing process that requires intention and effort. By setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and seeking support when needed, I am able to find a balance that allows me to thrive both personally and professionally.

What does self-care mean to you?

Dr. Shaenor: As a mother, wife, and mental health therapist, self-care means anything that allows me to reset, recharge, and reconnect with myself. It’s about prioritizing my mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being so that I can show up fully for my family, clients, and myself. This might include taking time for hobbies I enjoy such as physical activity. It also includes setting boundaries, seeking support from loved ones, or simply taking a moment to breathe and reflect. Self-care is not selfish; it’s essential for maintaining balance and overall health.

What are some things that women in particular can do to maintain great mental health?

Dr. Shaenor: Maintaining great mental health is essential for women, and there are several key practices they can incorporate into their lives. Firstly, prioritizing self-care is crucial. This includes activities like exercise, relaxation techniques, and hobbies that bring joy and reduce stress. This also includes mindfulness practices. Secondly, staying connected with friends, family, and the community provides valuable support and combats feelings of isolation. Seeking help when needed is also important; women should not hesitate to reach out to mental health professionals for therapy or counseling. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep contributes significantly to mental well-being. Setting boundaries in relationships and work helps prevent burnout and maintains a sense of control. Engaging in activities that promote mental health, such as journaling or practicing gratitude, can also be beneficial. Lastly, staying informed about mental health and seeking to understand one’s own mental well-being empowers women to take control of their mental health and overall happiness.
