From Adversity to Achievement

During the commemoration of Women’s History Month, we highlight the remarkable narrative of Melessa Denee, a living testament to resilience and empowerment. With more than thirty years immersed in the cosmetology realm, Melessa’s evolution from apprentice to esteemed beautician and salon proprietor underscores her unwavering commitment and perseverance. However, Melessa’s narrative extends beyond mere professional triumph; it resonates as a beacon of hope, symbolizing victory over adversity for women globally.

Please provide our readers with insight into your background, detailing your career beginnings and the trajectory that led to your current status as a thriving entrepreneur.

Melessa: As a Owner/Styling Artist, I have over 30 years of experience in the cosmetology industry, serving clients across various states including Delaware, Maryland, South Carolina, North Carolina, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and California. With formal training in Fashion Designs/Fashion Merchandising from Virginia State University, I began my career as a cosmetology apprentice in Delaware in 1988. My dedication and hard work led me to become an award-winning licensed beautician and own 2 thriving hair salons.

What characteristics or skills did it take for you to be a successful entrepreneur?

Melessa: Resilience when faced with adversity, as well as unwavering strength and determination.

Kindly elaborate on pivotal moments in your journey that underscored your resilience and capacity to overcome adversity.

Melessa: I had 2 near death experiences within 1 year. On my way back from healing, my husband had an accident at work and was out of work for 2 years. While my husband was recovering, my illness resurfaced which caused me to be placed on chemo and I experienced hair loss. My husband was on the way to recovery and shortly after my father passed away. While grieving the loss of my father and assisting my mom through this period of time my mother became ill and was hospitalized. Less than a year later my loving husband became ill and passed away. So I kept on persevering in purpose while in pain. God has continued to allow me to manage my businesses, along with my husbands’ trucking company (Black Widow Trucking) successfully.

What significance did assuming the responsibilities of both your own business ventures and the management of your late husband’s trucking company hold for you?

Melessa: I stepped into his shoes with grace and courage. Despite the hardships I had endured, I showed incredible resilience, turning obstacles into opportunities and inspiring those around me with my tenacity and perseverance. My ability to adapt, innovate, and thrive in the face of adversity is a true testament to my unwavering spirit.

What is your proudest business accomplishment?

Melessa: My proudest business accomplishment was developing the POSH haircare collection. POSH stands for Purpose Ownership Stewardship Humility while inspiring all to be great.
